About physical media

TL;DR

Physical media is dying and no petition will save it — so instead of fighting the inevitable, let's demand digital stores worth switching to.

Let’s start with the most recent drama: The big blue giant announced they will stop producing physical media for games in 2028. This decision has been made after thorough analysis of the market and shocked most of the community, with a lot of us moving to ask the big blue to not do that.

Let’s be real about this though: Physical media IS dying, and it was already written in stone that this day would’ve come sooner or later - we could do nothing about that then, and we can do nothing about that now: they’re not changing their idea.

The decision is data-backed, and we only need a couple minutes to find it: More than 80% of the videogames sold on consoles in 2023 were digital. If we take all platforms in account, the percentage goes up to about 95%. United Kingdom reports, in 2024, a 35-ish% drop in physical sales compared to 2023.

Also, they already took in account the losses that this will bring to them, and they’re more than compensated by the money they will save by doing so.

This automatically makes meaningless every single demand to keep that portion of market on.

What can be done, then? Ask for rights and improved digital marketplaces, as per the next chapter.
